Something similar came up on this string a while ago (I've lost the post).
According to an 18th c. tradition which I've yet to run to ground, the
sucessor
to St. Ivo as Bishop of Chartres, Godfrey of Leves, as an Archdeacon (I
believe)
of the Cathedral made a vow to go to Jerusalem and was in Rome, on his way
abroad, in 1116 when word reached him that he had been elected Ivo's sucessor.
Story is that he asked the Pope for a dispensation from his vow so that he
might
take the see, in return for founding a monastery on his paternal lands at
Leves.
He returned, was installed as Bishop and founded the abbey which he named
"St. Mary of Josaphat," Leves being down the valley of the Eure from Chartres
in an analogous fashion to that of abbey of St. Mary of Josaphat in the valley
below Jerusalem (and where a kinsman was soon to be installed as Abbot).
Surely nothing here (assuming the story is true) which could be called
"opposition"??
Best to all from here,
Christopher
