DCMS/WOLFSON PUBLIC LIBRARIES CHALLENGE FUND
ANNUAL REPORT PUBLISHED
In 1997/98 over #2.8 million was awarded to 30 library authorities in
Great Britain by the DCMS/Wolfson Public Libraries Challenge Fund.
The awards have helped to develop and apply information technology,
enhance reference sections and renovate and refurbish library
buildings.
Details of the awards are outlined in the Fund's 1997/98 Report,
which is published today. Welcoming the Report, Culture Secretary
Chris Smith said:
"This scheme has proved both popular and effective in its inaugural
year. I am extremely grateful to the Wolfson Foundation for agreeing
to partner DCMS in creating the Fund in 1997-98 and for its
continuing support this year and in 1999-2000.
"The library authorities which have benefitted from the scheme have
noted a range of advantages within the local authority and wider
community. It has also given library authorities an opportunity to
establish good relationships with other local authority departments,
local education providers, local businesses, special needs groups and
other libraries.
"The 1997/98 projects have set a fine example of what can be
achieved. I hope that they will continue to grow and develop along
with the communities they serve."
