The fifth annual Public libraries and communities conference

and the Community Services Group
of the Library Association

This year the conference will be discussing ‘place and cyberspace’ - the role of the public library as a physical place which local people go to and use; and the role of the library in helping to create and strengthen virtual local communities.
The conference Chair will be Tim Owen, Policy Advisor to the Library and Information Commission.
Speakers will include:
Members of The Pontefract Library Readers’ Group
Bob Usherwood, President of The Library Association and Reader in Library and Information Studies, University of Sheffield
Andy Kershaw, Manager of the Acorn Centre, Grimethorpe
Paul Marriott, researcher and author of a JRF study of community buildings;
plus others to be confirmed.
The event will also feature:
· the presentation ceremony for the 1998 Community Initiative Award, and
· the launch of the Communitywise online and CDROM information service (formerly Volnet UK)
Conference fee: £90.00 (£45 voluntary and community organisations)
