Albert, I apologize for the very late reply to your request.
In reviewing the articles that I had on hand, there was not a lot of
evidence to support what was the most common practice for cleaning the
PEG stoma. It appears that once or twice a day is sufficient and to use
soap and water. In most cases, a dressing is not required. The most
critical concern, however, if there is skin breakdown it probably is due
to "leakage" and hence this would need to be addressed. I have attached
a few articles that provide information on either leakage at the PEG
site or skin care. These articles are descriptive, not evidence based,
& not current.... hence not too helpful. Another good resource would be
to contact a stomatherapist (ie. Louanne Riche at Sunnybrook Health
Science Centre; # +1-416-480-4247) or Karen Witkovlski at MSH
(+1-416-586-5359).

Laurie and Eileen:
Can either of you answer this question, so that I can post the answer to
this person? I just don't know the nursing literature. Thanks. An easy
fast.

Dear all
apologies for x-posting
Some nursing colleagues of mine is seeking evidence to answer the
following question:
IN stroke patients being fed via percutaneous Endoscopic gastrostomy
how often should the peg site be cleaned to prevent infection (she
offers x1 or x 2 per day as comparators)
She reports that she has searched Cochrane, Medline and Cinahl using
terms Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy & Gastrology both as Mesh
and Text words.
found only 3 articles
