Believe it or not, it has also been happening in Complementary Medicine.
Two years ago, I taught a class on RCTs to a group of students on a
Complementary Medicine Studies MA at the University of Westminster. I
started by asking what they thought about the RCT. Their answers were
things like "reductionist"; "removes human element"; "inappropriate model
of causation"; "different paradigm" etc. etc.
I have recently taught the same course:
AV: Imagine we wanted to know whether acupuncture was an effective
treatment for headache. What would we do as researchers?
Student: A randomised trial.
AV: Any other thoughts? Comments?
Rest of class: Not really, it is a bit obvious isn't it?
