To adduce still another young German professor, even one of our best:
Andreas Speer at the Thomas Institute of Cologne has devoted several
publications over the past years to correcting what he regards as
misconceptions of Suger's role and writings (Simson, Panofsky, et al.). My
memory is extremely vague, and I cannot supply precise bibliographic info,
because I have browsed only briefly through one of his articles on this
subject, but as I recall it, his argument is in part philological, trying
to prove that Suger's writings about St. Denis have hitherto
ignored/neglected textual or generic precedents that undermine some of the
current interpretations. Speer is involved into a new critical edition of
Suger's writings prepared by his Institute, he is well known not only as
author of several books and articles, but also as an infatigable
organisator of conferences and editor of collective volumes, and he has the
additional merit of having gone to the same school and sung in the same
choir as I (where we heavily competed, he collecting all the praises and I
collecting consilia tacendi et abeundi). He can be reached c/o
