CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
for
The International Medieval Congress 1999
University of Leeds, England
July 12 - 15, 1999
Session Title: OUT OF THE DESERT:
SPIRITUAL EXCHANGES BETWEEN EASTERN AND WESTERN CHRISTIANITY
Session Organizer: Karin Boklund-Lagopoulou, Aristotle Uni of Thessaloniki
Session Topic: We are attempting to organise a session which will include
papers about the numerous and diverse kinds of exchanges between the two main
branches of Christianity.
The contacts between Westerners and Easterners in the middle ages allowed for
the diffusion of translations of Eastern origin in the West which propagated the
strong ascetic ideals of Egypt and Palestine. On the other hand, first with the
continuous flow of pilgrims to the Holy Places and then with the Crussades and
the Latin states which they established, the West influenced the development of
the Church in the East. These reciprocal movements helped shape the spirituality
of the people on both sides of the fence.
It is hoped that this session could shed some light on the effect which these
exchanges had on monastic revival movements across the ages, the shaping of
achoritic literature throughout Europe, the introduction and/or abolition of
cults of saints, traditions, and observances, the dissemination of Latin and
Greek manuscripts in East and West respectively, etc.
As we are a bit pressed for time, we would like to ask interested scholars to
reply as soon as possible. If we are unable to organise the session at this
time, it will be postponed for IMC 2000.
