Related to this history of the bible, may I suggest a very thought
provoking book by Harry Gamble: Books and Readers in the Early
Church. A History of Early Christian Texts (New Haven, 1995). He
makes a very interesting case (among other things) as to why early
Christians chose the codex as the main vehicle for their texts.
While not entirely convincing, it definitely got me thinking.
Cheers
Jim
