The same thing definately occured in nuns' houses. If you want 'direct
evidence' you need go no further than the cover of Jo Ann McNamara's book
on nuns *Sisters in Arms* The back cover depicts part of Pietro
Lorenzetti's quite beautiful panel of the Beata Umilta (now, I believe, in
the Uffizzi) which shows her reading to the nuns in the refectory.
