Dear Jim,
I have not yet found the time to follow this thread and don't know how much
has already said by others about the history of the Vulgate, but if a short
and dirty answer can do for the moment: what you have is actually not a
Vulgate in the strict sense but an edition following the revised text of
the Editio (Sixto-)Clementina (1592, 1593, 1598), revised on behalf of
Sixtus V. and published by Clement VIII, as your title itself states. This
revision was based on the Parisian text of the medieval Vulgate and,
depending on your specific medieval subject and on your specific line of
work, it can in some or many cases suffice to your needs. But it is
nevertheless only a selective reading of this medieval tradition, and after
all it is a revision. So if you don't want to be mislead by a revised
reading or by a reading which was already medieval but did not happen to be
the one which informed the cultural or literary context that you are
interested in, then I recommend rather to be cautious and to check with the
critical editions of the Vulgate.
