VIRTUAL
VIEWING
DIGITISATION OF LOCAL HISTORY RESOURCES IN LIBRARIES ARCHIVES & MUSEUMS
County Hall Durham
A day school organised by Library Association, Local Studies Group and
Arts, Libraries and Museums Department, Durham County Council
Thursday 15 October 1998
The aim of the day school is to highlight proposals and projects for the
digitisation of local studies material held in libraries, museums and
archives. Speakers from across the United Kingdom will share their
experience of some of the current projects aimed at preserving our heritage
while improving access through electronic media. Digitisation is the key
to proposals such as the National Grid for Learning, which will allow
unprecedented access to information currently restricted by the fragility
of its original media or distance from the researcher. The day school is
for everyone interested in the future of local history, from professional
to enthusiast. County Hall is a short distance from the railway station
and is easily accessible by road from the A1 and A691. Car parking is
available (see transport map overleaf). The fee for the dayschool is ?10
and buffet lunch can be provided for delegates at a cost of ? 4 each.
