Dear Stephen
Good to hear that someone has taken up this much neglected topic. I should
be fascinated to hear what you come up with. In my long search for evidence
of crusade propaganda, the Iberian Crusades turned out to be the toughest
nut to crack. However, I am sure that there must be more out there than I
found, and I wish you much luck!
As you probably know, there are a number of crusade model sermons of the
thirteenth century, which I am editing and studying just now (typescript to
be finished by the end of the year). None of these model sermons
particularly mention the Iberian Crusade, but many of them could well have
been used for the preaching of any crusade, including the Iberian one. As a
note of caution, don't be mislead (as others I'm afraid have been,
originally including myself) by the mention of the 'anonymous' crusade
model sermons at Barcelona which I refer to in note 1 on p. 170 of my
'Preaching the Crusades'. They are straightforward crusade sermon models
and again do not mention the Iberian Crusade at all. Research since the
publication of my book has made it possible for me to identify these sermon
models more clearly: They are of early fourteenth century date, their
author is none other than Bertrand de la Tour, and there exist another four
manuscripts of the collection in which they appear. I have included them in
the edition and study mentioned above, so they will be available in print
before long I hope (and CUP willing).
I should be fascinated to hear more about your project as it evolves, on or
off list.
Good luck
Christoph
