*******Apologies for cross-posting**********
Interdisciplinary sessions are being organized for Kalamazoo (1-2) and
Leeds (2) 1999 focusing on the topic of anticlericalism in its widest
sense. The sessions will deal with written and artistic sources which
attack or lampoon any member of the church, secular or regular, these
sourcesı intended audiences, and where known, the causes for criticism
(entertainment, reform attempts, etc) and reactions to these messages.
Papers already accepted include treatments of bishops in early
medieval visions, the image of priests in fabliaux, the combination of
anticlericalism and misogynistic critique in the poem Why I canıt be
a nun,ı Oderic Vitalisı attacks on uncharitable monks, and reformist
critiques of priests and bishops in the face of Cathar and Waldensian
conceptions of the ideal minister. Proposals from various disciplines
are warmly welcomed.
