There is another translation of Jesu nostra redemptio which is less free
than Chandler's, "Jesu, Redemption all divine", used as the Ascension
compline hymn in The Monastic Diurnal (OUP,1932), The Hours of Prayer
(Mowbray,3rd ed.rev.,1928) and The Priest"s Book of Private Devotion
(Mowbray, rev.ed.,1929). The English Hymnal, from the same tradition,
presents Chandler's version.
The stanza" Ipsa te cogat pietas ut mala nostra superes parcendo, et voti
compotes nos tuo vultu saties" is translated "Let very mercy force thee
still To spare us, conquering all our ill; And granting that we ask, on
high With thine own face to satisfy."
Thanks, Bill East and Stan Metheney, for your helpful insights on this.
