As I recall, the facades of both Chartres and Notre Dame cathedrals,
among others, portray the seven virtues as the seven arts and sciences,
the trivium correlated with the theological virtues (Faith, Hope,
Charity) and the quadrivium with the four cardinal virtues. Each has a
patron, David for Music, Euclid for Geometry, etc. Aquinas and Augustine
commented on them at length. I vaguely remember that Prudence was also
paired with craftsmanship. Armillaries were an emblem of astronomy
before Ptolemy.
