Asuming I'm Steve, can I clarify? :-) Bernard's baptism discourse in
_Par_. XXXII does indeed push the envelope a bit, but not on this
particular point (which, as a couple of posters have already pointed out,
is relatively commonplace). As far as I remember it's the argument about
the unequal distribution of grace among the (saved) baptized infants that
is Dante's chief idiosyncrasy - but I did this research a long time ago and
I no longer have the details at my finger's ends (without re-reading my
article, which would be a little too much like the dog in Proverbs :-})
