In Spain, St James the Great became known as the Matamoros, and
became commonly seen on a white charger leading Christian troops into
battle against the Muslims. To a lesser extent, St George acquired
the same reputation during the Crusades. There are lots of military
saints, but their military exploits are seldom emphasized as much as
their refusal to follow the order to worship idols. St Louis may
have been a crusader, but I've never heard him described as
"violent"!
