The recent mailing title of Kings and Bishops has reminded me of a
query which I have been meaning to post for a while.
I have been working on a Victorian church in Cardiff which contains
four large heads (in two pairs) as capitals supporting some arches
above an arcade in the chancel. They appear to be of a King, a
Queen, a Bishop and a nobleman (?knight?).
We have many smaller supporting heads throughout the church. The
architect (John Prichard) includes medieval features (eg
respresentations of ecclesia and synagoga) in the building. In
another of his churches I have again seen four large heads featuring
a King, a Queen, a Bishop and this time a Knight in armour. In
various of his churches, Prichard has included portrait heads which
can identified, including Queen Victoria and the Bishop of Llandaff
at the time of building. However, the sets of four heads I am
referring to here do not appear to be these portraits.
Are there medieval examples of such groupings of these four subjects?
