Why not stone? According to Lewis and Short's dictionary a "presepe"
seems to be (among other things) an enclosure for animals like horses
or oxen, a stall -- although I seem to recall that Nativity Scenes
make the crib out to be more a makeshift cradle, like a recycled
feeding trough .
