There are many better sources for the question of primal sin/sex than
myself, but I can add something to the notion of red hair and its
meanings. In Estern European Jewish culture, specifically in Yiddish
folktales, red-haired women are often allied with temptation and evil.
There are similar stories in Chinese folktales and in Native North
American traditions as well. Of course Judas was usually red-haired in
many depictions as well. The only positive red-haired figure I can think
of is the West Coast Native (I think Salish) story of the Wolf with the
Moon in his Tail. The wolf falls in love with a beautiful red-haired
woman and captures her from the camp, placing her in the sky so that he
can always see her wherever he gors. She is the Moon, of course. So as
to a red haired saint, I am also surprised.
An interesting heritage - I rather like being descended from all these
wild red heads, frankly. Regards, Terry
