I expressed myself badly. I meant to indicate the student's keen
engagment with the subject and a refreshingly passionate desire to know
and understand. I used the discussion-list because I myself had no idea
how to start to answer the question and I was anxious to respond to the
commitment of my students.
I can assure you that none of the group are bad-tempered. And under no
circumstances would I make any derogatory remark in public about my
students.

Exactly so, Ian. And could I add that if anyone could extract a
derogatory remark in public from Ian about a student (or in any other
way improve on his teaching practice), I would happily eat hats -
though less happily my own, which are particularly unappetising.
