- student with Origen at Alexandria; founded a great theological
library that still existed in the time of Eusebius, who made use of it
- martyred during the Decian persecution
* Cyril, archbishop of Jerusalem (386)
- due mainly to his expositions of the faith, he was declared by pope
Leo XIII to be a doctor of the church
* Frediano of Lucca (588?)
- Irish by birth, Tuscan hermit by choice, he was induced to become
bishop of Lucca; miraculously changed the path of the river Serchio,
so that it would no longer damage the city's walls or crops
* Edward the Martyr (979)
- according to William of Malmesbury, Edward's murdered body was
thrown into a swamp, but it was discovered by a miraculous light
shining down on it; relics buried first in Wareham, then in
Shaftesbury
* Anselm of Lucca (1086)
- nephew of pope Alexander II, he was called by Gregory VII to leave
his Cluniac monastery and become bishop of Lucca
- much work is being done on his *Collectio Canonum*; one recent
