I have a question about readings in the Mass during
the Middle Ages. Another list I'm on reported that
readings from Hebrew Bible (i. e. Old Testament) were
not part of the Mass, and that even the Psalms were
usually cited/sung for only a verse or two. This
contradicts what little I know about the subject.
Following is the chief part of the person's post:
"Selections from
it were NOT read during the Mass, the only church
service most
Christians attended, but only selections from the
"epistles" and
"gospels" in the "New Testament." Readings from the
psalms and the
Hebrew bible were generally added to the principal
service by
Protestants; the use of readings from the Hebrew
bible -- including even
the use of more than a verse or two from the psalms
-- in the Catholic
Mass is a Vatican II (1960s) innovation."
This is for my own information, not part of a debate,
but can anyone help me see the light, so to speak?
