Last year I read a student paper which argued that "In the
Middle Ages everyone believed in God and so they all wanted
to die," - as opposed to the Renaissance in which,
presumably, people didn't believe in God and wanted to live.
Slightly subtler versions of this argument are still
surprisingly widespread.
