Re the discussion of relics of the Virgin's milk,
I was reading Mandeville's Travels while my students wrote their midterm
exams today and came across:
(ch 9; I quote from the Penguin edition/translation by CWRD Moseley, p. 75)
"A little way from this church is another church, of St Nicholas, where Our
Lady rested when she had given birth to her Child. And because she had too
much milk in her breasts, which sore hurt her, she milked it out on the red
slabs of marble that were there. The spots of white milk are still to be
seen on the stone."
