I'm not up to date on this myself, but I think you
need to be wary of any assumption that vernacular mystery
plays grew out of the latin church dramas. Modern
scholarship tends to regard them as separate traditions.
For the earlier view, and plenty of excellent texts, look at
K.Young's 'Drama of the Medieval Church' but balance it with
more recent work eg. by O.B. Hardison, R. Axton which
challenges it. These refs are themselves very out of date;
I'm sure someone on the list will be able to add to/correct
them.
