I can remember some examples about the sculptures painted in Spain,
obviously catholics. The question is limited only on the external
parts of the churches, because inside all sculptures are painted
(even almost ever nowadays).
It seems that medieval sculptures out the churches were painted
always, if they could finish it (sometimes they couldn't). The
tradition continued in the Renaissance and Baroque period. Can be
observed a lot of sculptures out the spanish Baroque churches.
But several Renaissance main fronts seemingly weren't polychromated.
Finally Classicism leaves this custom.
Bests regards,
Carlos Escribano
