The extent of destruction of the wall paintings in the churches of England
by the Puritans is described in
"A. Caiger-Smith, English Medieval Mural Paintings, Oxford, Claredon Press,
1963, page 116."
He cites the diary of William Dowsing, written in East Anglia in 1644, which
contains the records of nearly 200 churches in which all the religious art
was destroyed.
But it must be remembered - these were not Roman Catholic churches. They
were Anglican churches, the State of Established Church.
