The British Archaeological Association conference for 1998
will be held in Windsor from 18 to 22 July:
Medieval Art And Architecture Of Windsor Castle, Reading
Abbey And Eton College
The 1998 Conference will be held at Royal Holloway College,
Egham, Surrey. The principal focus of the conference will
be the history, archaeology, art and architecture of
Windsor Castle, which is close by, with particular
attention to St George's Chapel including studies of its
stained glass, woodwork tiles and wall paintings. Visits
are planned to both upper and lower wards of the Castle, to
Eton College, Reading Abbey, and other local buildings and
sites of interest.
Outline Programme
It is hoped that the following papers will be among those
delivered at the Conference:
Christopher Wilson - An introduction to the medieval
palaces in Windsor Castle.
Virginia Jansen - Henry III at Windsor: castle building and
court. Tim Tatton-Brown - Constructional sequence of the
college and chapel buildings at St George's. Richard Morris
- Master masons at Windsor in the 14th and 15th centuries.
John Crook - Post-medieval Canons' houses. Sam Riches - The
imagery of the Virgin Mary and St George in the woodwork of
St George's Chapel Peter Begent - The heraldic decoration
of St George's Chapel Janet Backhouse - William Lord
Hastings and Sir John Donne and their connections with St
George's Chapel Richard Marks - John Schorne. Bridget
Cherry - Some early Tudor tombs and chantries and their
Windsor connections. Sarah Brown - Stained glass at St
George's. Jane Geddes - The 13th-century chapel doors,
Edward IV gates and other metalwork at St George's.
Laurence Keen - Medieval floor-tiles at Windsor Castle.
Patrick Mitchell - The 'tables' of the Knights of the
Garter. David Park - Wall paintings in Windsor Castle.
Brian Kemp - Reading Abbey and town. Mike Fulford - Recent
work on the Roman town of Silchester. Nigel Saul -
Shottesbrooke Church and its knightly patronage.
Linda Monckton - The architectural contribution of Bishop
Waynflete to Eton.

Student Scholarships
Conference Scholarships (covering the full cost including
accommodation) are available to students. Scholars will be
expected to attend all sessions of the Conference.
Applicants should supply a cv and a statement of reasons
for wishing to attend, together with TWO references from
persons of appropriate academic standing. These should be
sent to the Conference Secretary.
