UNIVERSITY OF YORK
Department of English & Related Literature
TWO LECTURESHIPS IN
MEDIEVAL ENGLISH LITERATURE
Applications are invited for two permanent Lectureships in Medieval English Literature, from 1
January 1999 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates must have expertise in one or both of
the following:
Old English Literature
Middle English Literature
We will consider seriously any candidate who is highly qualified within the specified period.
Applications are specially welcomed from those who also have expertise in another medieval
literature (French, Latin, Italian, Old Norse) or in Medieval Drama, but this should not discourage
applicants with other types of expertise.
The successful candidates will have excellent research records and be equipped to contribute to the
Department's teaching of postmedieval English & Related Literature as well as to the activities of
the interdisciplinary Centre for Medieval Studies. Moreover, they will be required to play a full part
in the normal pattern of administration in the Department and in the Centre.
These posts are part of a Departmental restructuring programme following certain staff retirements
along with new investment in the Department by the University. The Department was rated as
excellent' in the Teaching Quality Assessment for English and as 5' in the 1996 Research
Assessment Exercise.
