Good day, eh?
I seek some information concerning the graveside rites used in
the late middle ages. My question arises from the fact that the
graveside rites in *The Book of Common Prayer* (at least the
older ones) is virtually identical to that used by Lutherans
(again, as found in pre-1970 sources; haven't checked the newer
ones).
The Lutheran English-language rites come from the *kirchen-
ordnungen* of the sixteenth century prepared for the newly
constituted Lutheran churches. I understand -- perhaps erron-
eously -- that the BCP rites were translated from the Latin.
Their virtual identity suggests, at least to me, a common
parent. Can anyone shed light on this for me? Besides an
academic curiosity, this information would assist me in
carrying out a pastoral responsibility that has become mine.
Biographical information would be helpful also.
Many thanks!
