There has been quite a lot of corrective work done on childhood since
Aries. In particular, I think Barbara Hanawalt's _Ties That Bound_ shows
how "affection" for children might have been played out in a specifically
medieval context. Also helpful is the overview by Shulamith Shahar,
_Childhood in the Middle Ages_. Frankly, there has been so much
revisionist work on medieval childhood, it mystifies me why anyone still
uses Aries, who didn't even focus on the Middle Ages.
