Tom,
I'm assuming you would have noticed if it were a spinning wheel. Here's
another unusual wheel. Saint Donatian holds a wheel with a lighted candle,
because when his enemies threw him in the river to drown, he was saved by
Saint Augustine, who threw him a wheel with a lighted candle on it--that I
guess SD was able to use as a lifesaver.
Question--why was Saint Augustine walking by the river carrying a wheel with a
lighted candle? In van Eyck's painting (Madonna with Canon van der Poele),the
wheel looks like a wagon wheel.
