Director, Florence (Italy) Program

arts, seeks nominations and applications for the position of
Director of the University's residential program in Florence,
Italy. The Director, who reports directly to the Dean of
International Programs in Malibu, is responsible for leading a
year-round academic program and administering an annual budget
of more than 2 billion lira (approximately $1.25 million.)
The program is conducted in a University-owned facility,
centrally located in Florence. The facility houses 54 Seaver
College undergraduates and a Visiting Faculty family and
contains classrooms, a library, music room, computer laboratory
(with full Internet connections), administrative offices,
student center, and a commercial-grade kitchen where student
meals are prepared. Each student is required to study Italian.
Other courses satisfy general education requirements and are
taught in English, although a new curriculum that integrates
language study into most other courses is being developed for
implementation in 1999. The University conducts similar programs
in University-owned facilities in London and Heidelberg, as well
as summer and exchange programs in Europe, Asia, South America,
and Australia. Half of all Seaver College students study
overseas in one of these programs before graduation.
The Director is expected to be fluent and literate in the
Italian language and must hold an advanced degree that qualifies
the Director to teach courses that may be offered in the
program. The Director must also be able to lead the students on
an educational field trip to another country, which is an
integral part of the educational program, each semester.

a vital relationship with the Churches of Christ. Thus, the
Director must be able to provide effective leadership in
advancing this dimension of the University's mission in both its
educational and co-curricular contexts.

include a full curriculum vitae, including salary history, the
names and telephone numbers of five referees who may be
contacted, and a written statement of the ways in which the
applicant's experiences and qualifications fit the position
requirements described above. The review of all applications
received by 15 February 1998 will begin on that date will
continue until a Director has been selected.
