This is a last minute call for papers for a panel entitled "National
and
Trans-national Identities in Latin American and the Mediterranean; A
Comparative Look," to be included in the IX Congress of the
International
Federation of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (FIEALC), which
will be
held at Tel-Aviv University between 12-15 April 1999.
The panel will deal with the interaction between identities that
correspond to existing political borders, and others which do not.
The questions to be dealt with should be: Why do people look outside
their
national borders when trying to understand themselves and recreate
their
identity, and how do they do it? What conditions lead people to
emphasize
their belonging/not-belonging to political or cultural entities which
transcend the borders of their country? Do transnational identities
weaken or strengthen the more particular ones? Are these two kinds of
identities mutually reinforcing or destructive?
