Call for Papers
The Fifth Annual International Sustainable Development Research Conference

University of Leeds, UK
March 25th-26th, 1999

ERP Environment, publishers of the international journal Sustainable
Development are pleased to announce this fifth annual conference. We are
seeking offers of papers from researchers and practitioners in the fields
of sustainable development and environmental management. Papers may
address any relevant area but contributors may find guidance amongst the
key criteria listed below:

* Definitions, concepts and implications of sustainable development
* Business and sustainable development
* Monitoring and sustainable development
* Poverty, population and health
* Institutional arrangements and the practice of sustainable development
* Planning and implementing sustainable development
* Economic policy instruments and sustainable development
* Strategies for sustainable development
* Local action for sustainable development
* Cooperation and alliances for a sustainable future
* Education and sustainable development
* The implementation of Agenda 21
* Environmental management and sustainability
* The role of women and minority groups

The challenge of sustainable development requires everybody and every
institution to evaluate its long term strategy and to consider how best we
can move the planet away from its unsustainable track. Governments,
regulators, policy makers, NGOs, business and individuals must seek to
address these challenges into the twenty-first century.

The conference seeks to bring together an international interdisciplinary
audience to begin to tackle many of the issues connected with sustainable
development - to share experiences and to begin to work towards solutions.
By building informal partnerships and in offering opportunities to share
ideas this conference seeks to move this complex debate forward.

Papers are invited which address any of the diverse issues associated with
sustainable development. Initial abstracts of 200 words should be
submitted to the Conference Organiser not later than 16th October, 1998.
Selected papers may be published in the journal Sustainable Development.

The conference is to be held at Devonshire Hall, a University of Leeds
hall of residence, located within easy reach of Leeds city centre,
Leeds/Bradford Airport and A1, M1 and M62 motorways.

Conference Fee
The conference fee, including lunch on both days, refreshments and the
conference proceedings is £249. Delegates may attend the conference dinner
for £18.00. Conference fee reductions are available for group bookings
(£220 per person for groups of two, £200 per person for groups of three or
more). To keep the cost of the event to attendees as low as possible, the
conference fee is payable by speakers as well as delegates. All prices are
subject to VAT at 17.5%. Further reductions can be obtained by charities,
voluntary groups and students.

Accommodation
Overnight accommodation is provided at Devonshire Hall. Bedrooms are basic
student single rooms and bathroom facilities are shared between 2-3
delegates. If delegates would prefer to make arrangements for hotel
accommodation elsewhere, a list of suitable hotels in the area can be
provided on request.

Publicity Opportunities are available to include publicity in delegate
packs @ £80 + VAT. For further information contact Elaine White at the
number given below.
