Dear list member,
Firstly, I would like to apologise for the problems caused by a mail loop
recently created on the env-ed-research mailing list. I am assured by
mailbase that this has now been resolved. I am also aware of the ill
feeling this creates, particularly at such a busy time of year for many
people. My sincerest apologies.
Secondly, it seems appropriate to introduce a few reminders about mailing
list procedures. If you wish to change addresses, leave a list, etc.,
please use the mailbase protocols, rather than leaving a potential problem
to escalate into something like yesterday's looping fiasco. The commands
are all listed in the introductory file to the list, or can be viewed on
the web starting at: http://www.mailbase.ac.uk
Suspending mail
---------------
If you wish to suspend mail, e.g you are going on holiday, then send this
message:
suspend mail all
to:
[log in to unmask]
When you wish to receive the mail again, send:
resume mail all
to:
[log in to unmask]
Remember that you can use the archives to catch up on any messages you
may have missed, at: http://www.mailbase.ac.uk/lists/env-ed-research
Mail digests
------------
Alternatively, you might want to receive a digest from the list (it is
defaulted to be sent every 20 messages), rather than every message one at
a time. A digest has the advantage of reducing the volume of traffic into
your mailbox.
To receive messages from this list in a digest form, send the following
message:
set env-ed-research digest
to:
[log in to unmask]
And to stop receiving messages as a digest, send:
set env-ed-research nodigest
to:
mailbase.ac.uk
Leaving the list
----------------
If you prefer to leave the list, or change your address details, then
send:
leave env-ed-research
to:
[log in to unmask]
(Re)Joining the list
----------------
To (re)join, substitute the terms appropriately, and send a message in
this form:
join env-ed-research firstname lastname
to:
[log in to unmask]
from the mailer you wish to be registered at.
-------------
*REMEMBER* these messages should be the only thing in the body of the
text. No templates, headers or footers. For example, type 'stop' on the
next line of your message if you have an automated footer command: it is
a computer that deals with your messages, and only becomes a person when
it is sent on to someone like me, e.g.:
join env-ed-research Alan Reid
stop
-------------
Hope this makes things easier.
Best wishes,
Alan Reid
