Has anyone compared the speed of Fortran 90 programs compiled by
Digital Visual Fortran on
Windows NT on Alpha and Intel machines? I have heard that the
Alpha 164 LX 21164 CPU (533 MHz) with 2MB of cache
can be more than four times faster a Pentium Pro machine, for about
the same price. If this is the
case in general for applications dominated by floating-point
operations, it seems to me that
Digital Alpha machines offers much better price/performance for
scientific computing.
