I have had a query from a colleague and wonder whether his need can
be met? Below I copy his questions and ask for anyone with particular
knowledge about this to please reply. Thanks very much.

I have to define a real function which I would like to take the appropriate
kind type automatically:
real(SP) dform (x)
etc.
but it is used as an actual argument in a subroutine call and therefore must
have the external attribute. So it can't be declared as an internal:
use types
:
contains
real(SP) dform (x)
etc.
It seems I have no choice but to explicitly state real or double precision.
Can you see a way around this?
