If I remember the C standard correctly, bytes are defined such that they are a
minimum of eight bits and are the same size as a character. If I remember
Cray's correctly, at one time they were not too concerned about conserving
space and characters were word size, i.e., 64 bits. So a Cray had 1 byte words
as bytes were defined in C. (Newer Crays may have changed this.) Anyone want
to deal with these implications?
