Dear Citizens of the Republic of Knowledge,
I shall be passing several short research intervals in Germany in
the upcoming year. After ahving lived in Germany for long periods of
time and after having had difficulties with both Deutsch Telekom and
its quasi-baby-Bell offspring, I have concluded that it might be easier
to have a cell phone than to plug into the national system. Therefore,
I am wondering the following:
1. Whether it is possible to use a modem in conjunction
with a cell phone, that is, whethr the necessary equipment
(etcetera) exists to allow me to plug the output of a
modem into the input of a cell phone, dial, and link to
an Internet provider;
2. Whether there is such a thing as a truly international
cell phone company, that is, whether it is possible to sign
with an American (or other) provider that has cell phone
coverage in Europe; and
3. Whether there is some system that combines these two goals,
that is, whether there is an American (or other) provider
with international capacity whose equipment allows its conjoint
use with a modem from an external computer; or
4. Barring all the above, what is the best option from within
the various German or European telephone providers to achieve
my computer usage objectives in Germany.
Thanks for any advice or anecdotes from experience! Cheers, Kevin L.
