A quick note before hurrying out on an early morning gig.
I've been disappointed to see no more mention on the Buffalo Poetics list of
Ric and Peter Quartermain's "Other" anthology. I haven't checked the list
this morning yet.
Instead, I'm now hoping that in my enthusiasm -- a warm but honest reaction --
I haven't created the risk of a negative discussion on this Brit list: you
know, that kind of negativity which all anthologists have to run into.
Could I appeal to all listees who have access to the Buffalo list to
contribute to a discussion there about the anthology? That's where it will
count. It takes prolonged residence in the States to realise the extent of US
ignorance (and often disinterest) about poetry being written in Britain -- I
have a certain privileged position in that regard because of friendships,
residence, and marriage.
Not everyone, including me, naturally goes into Internet to read websites.
It's going to take a work to get people over there to access Ric and Peter's
introduction on the Jacket site.
In nearly all respects the introduction is excellent. The slight bias I have
claimed to see in it is just how (underlined) such introductions get written
at all -- obviously, there'll be a point of view.
I don't see how present barriers between the two countries' poetry -- barriers
which are in fact gradually coming down at long last -- will be finally
tumbled unless the Brits show a true transatlantic energy.
