Ruth Padel is a poet I enjoy, and she is very pretty which always helps
with me. I am following her Irish love affair with great interest.
I am reminded that Michael SChmidt said a year or two ago that having
passed 40 himself he found that he could no longer appreciate poets
younger than 40. There is an element of truth in this. New generations
replacing the old. But again very few poets of the hordes that start
out in their 20s are any good, and by the time they reach the age of 40
most will have fallen by the wayside. What you see on Britpo is the
survivors. The grizzled oldyins who never called it a day.
