Vianna da Motta Balada
Janacek On an overgrown path Book II
In the mists
Chopin 24 Preludes op28.
"His distinctive virtue was a penetrating singing tone that was
concentrated, effective and never brittle." New York Times
"He has a strong personality, imposes himself on the audiences, has an
astonishing creativity in his interpretation and a perfect technical quality.
His intelligence and culture are immediately noticed". This is how Alfred
Brendel described the young Portuguese pianist Pedro Burmester and
reviews from around the world testify to the same:
"He played clearly and harmoniously showing an intuitive pianistic talent,
excellent training and, without doubt, a great deal of imagination." Die
Welt.
Burmester will be returning to London to make his first appearance at
Wigmore Hall on Wednesday 11th November at 7.30pm. His concert is
being supported by Portugal 600, the London based foundation which
actively promotes Portuguese arts and culture in the UK and Ireland.
His programme will include music by the Portuguese composerpianist
Viannada Motta, Janacek and Chopin. The music of Vianna da Motta is
seldom performed in this country and this will be a rare opportunity to hear
this fascinating pianist's Balada. José Vianna da Motta (18681948) was
Franz Liszt's last major pupil and friend of Ferruccio Busoni. He was
instrumental in the formation of a new tradition of piano playing and with
Busoni he led the way for pianists in Berlin including Rachmaninov,
Schnabel and Scriabin.
Burmester was the second prize winner at the Vianna da Motta
International Piano Competition in Lisbon, where other winners have
included Nelson Friere and Artur Pizarro, followed by the Jury
Discretionary Award at the Van Cliburn Competition in 1989. He has since
established himself as one of Portugal's leading pianists and in 1994 was
invited by Sir Georg Solti to perform as a soloist at the opening concert of
the "Lisbon, Cultural Capital of Europe 1994" festival programme.
Burmester has become a frequent visitor to the major European festivals
and venues such as La Roque d'Anthéron, 92nd Street Y, Le Châtelet in
Paris and the Kölner Philharmonie. He performs with orchestras and
soloists such as the LPO, the Northern Sinfonia, Rotterdam Philharmonic
and Anner Bylsma and Thomas Zehetmair. He also recently toured
Australia with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Burmester has made
several recordings with a number of different record labels, such as EMI
Angel, EMI Classics and BMG/RCA Classics. His discography includes
works by Schumann, J.S. Bach, Mendelssohn and Chopin. There are
further plans to record the complete Beethoven Sonatas on the BMG/RCA
label and the Beethoven Concertos.
