This is the first in an anticipated series of presentations and forums
marking the re-opening of The Green Room and its place at the core of
contemporary arts, media and cultural debate. Starting from Einstein's
notion that, 'you can never solve a problem with the kind of thinking that
created it', the aim is to bring together audiences, artists, academics and
related professionals interested in new perspectives on cultural change.
PHILIP AUSLANDER, from the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA is
currently touring Europe speaking on a range of platforms. His presentation
at The Green Room develops the innovative media thinking of Walter
Benjamin, exploring how contemporary mind-sets are further shaped by a
media-saturated environment. Philip is a contributing editor for TDR and
his publications include 'Presence and Resistance: Postmodernism and
Cultural Politics in Contemporary American Performance' and 'From Acting to
Performance'. His next book 'Liveness: Performance in a Mediatized Culture'
is forthcoming from Routledge in Spring 1999.
I hope to be seing you there
