Poor Show, Great Publicity
It's a fact: getting funding for arts is as much an art as the art itself.
And no civic marketing board knows it better than Birmingham's. On Friday
the city goes into overdrive. To what end? They call it Artfest.
This is the headline for an article in today's Independent (section2 p10)
This event uses money from the New Audiences Fund - the article is pretty
scathing in parts but ultimately supportive of the role of marketing in
audience development .5 million is not much to put towards long term
strategies (that is the total for Chris Smith initiative not the
Birmingham budget). Is the new Audience fund a valuable kick-start or is
it just a political knee jerk reaction to be seen to be doing something?
