Every day there seems to be another high-profile case depending on or
strongly related to records management issues. Today and yesterday they
were:
1. The police have lost control of their database containing the names
of "grasses", thereby putting the lives of these people at risk. The
database was compiled as a result of rules set up to try to reduce the
risk of corruption, and the names have to be made available to the Crown
Prosecution Service. As anyone might have predicted, this has led to a
leak.
2. Today we have comment on how unnecessary secrecy led to the public
being endangered through BSE. The comment centres on the govt's repeated
postponement of the promised FOI bill, and how public access to the data
would have made everyone safer.
I expect there will be another case tomorrow.
Regards to all, Michael Cook
