Dear all,
Please DO NOT send compliment slips to Craig John! This is a
meaningless chain letter.
In 1989 a 9 year old called Craig Shergold was diagnosed with a brain
tumour and attempted to get into the Guinness Book of Records as
having received the most ever Get Well cards. By 1990 he had received
over 15 million cards. In 1991 he was operated on and has made a
complete recovery.
Unfortunately, the request has circulated around the world in several
forms and under several names - Craig Sherfield, Craig Richards, Gary
Roberts, and Craig John.
The address in Carshalton continues to receive a huge and almost
unstoppable amount of mail - get well cards, compliment slips etc.
More information on this can be obtained from the Make-A-Wish
Foundation UK, which has asked recipients not to pass on such
requests.
Regards,
Rodney Breen

The original message:
"One of our regular searchers has told us of a friend who has a son
who is terminally ill with cancer. The son is attempting to get into
the Guinness Book of Records for collecting the largest number of
compliment slips.
If any archivists, records managers etc have any old or new compliment
slips they would like to donate to this cause, they can be sent
directly to the young man involved. His name is Craig John and his
address is 38 Selby Road, Carshalton, Surrey, SM15 1LD."
