A GP sent two SST vacutainer tubes of blood from a 36 year old woman
to Pathology for Vit B12 and folate. An EDTA sample for FBC was also
sent. Sample A was sent directly to Biochemistry arriving at 15.15.
The Vit B12 was 437 ng/L and the folate 7.4 ug/L. Sample B was sent to Haematology and arrived in
Biochemistry, from Haematology, via the airtube system an hour after
sample A. Sample B gave Vit B12 of 769ng/L and folate 7.5 ug/L.
Both samples were centrifuged on arrival in the laboratory. Neither
sample was haemolysed. The results are analytically correct. Can
anyone explain what is going on--EDTA contamination/SST contaminated/
airtube effect prior to centrifugation of sample/ other?
Thanks
Leonie Shapiro
