Whilst I aknowledge that this mailbase is traditionally not a forum for
debate on such issues I must correct an error of fact in Dr Forrest's
contribution "Affiliate Membership and a whole lot more".
The BMA, the British Dental Association, Royal College of Nurses, Royal
College of Midwives and most of the PAMs professional bodies are all fully
recognised Trades Unions both generally bt the Trade Union Certification
Officer, the Govt official who is guardian of such things, and by the
Whitley Council for negotiating within the NHS.
The BMA is indeed probably one of the UK's most successful unions. To say
that "nobody considers its pronunciations on salaries, registration and
staffing structures as anything other than those of a set of special
interest groups with a particular set of axes to grind" totally
misrepresents reality.
